​MHA Mission Statement

To provide decent, safe, and stable housing to help communities thrive and assist low-income families increase their potential for long-term economic success and a sustained high quality of life.

 

McAlester Housing Authority (MHA) is a local government entity operating in accordance with policies established by the Board of Commissioners and statutes administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

 MHA was founded and established in 1969, MHA provides affordable housing and a housing assistance program for low-income families within the city limits of McAlester.

 

The MHA administers two (2) Low-income Housing Programs,

Public Housing & Section 8

to assist families in need.

Public Housing

The MHA owns and manages 274 low-income Public Housing units.

Units are rented to eligible applicants, the rent is based upon

30% of their income and any deduction they may have. Unit sizes consist of

0 Bedroom (Studio), 1 Br, 2 Br, 3 Br, 4 Br and 5 Br. 

There is a waiting list for every size unit.

Section 8

The MHA administers 77 Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers. 

Eligible applicants are offered a voucher and are allowed to go find a private landlord within city limits. If the landlord agrees to the rent limitations & the unit passes inspection, the MHA then enters into a contract to pay a portion of the tenant's rent while the tenant pays a portion based upon a percentage of their income. The MHA only receives a fixed amount of money per month for vouchers.

There is a waiting list for a Section 8 Voucher.
