Income Limit for
Public Housing & Section 8

First Affordable Housing Definition:

Housing is considered “affordable” when a household spends less than 30% of income on rent or mortgage. When a household is spending above this amount, it is considered “cost burdened.” Everyone needs affordable housing, but not every household has the income to support rising housing costs in McAlester. MHA provides affordable housing in the form of Public Housing, and the Housing Choice Voucher Program (HCVP)

To be eligible to apply for assistance, the total yearly family income cannot exceed the amount listed below for the size of family:

1 person $39,850.00 Annually

2 people $45,550.00 Annually

3 people $51,250.00 Annually

4 people $56,900.00 Annually

5 people $61,500.00 Annually

6 people $66,050.00 Annually

7 people $70,600.00 Annually

8 people $75,150.00 Annually

If HUD changes these limits anytime during the year, the McAlester Housing Authority will immediately begin using the HUD established and published income limits at that time and will update at its earliest convenience.

Public housing families pay 30% of their adjusted monthly income for rent or they may choose to pay a HUD determined regional “flat rent”.
